ATOM has something for just about everyone.  Even secular humanists can get into the Christmas spirit!

updated 1 November 2006: Brevard, NC– The world’s only museum dedicated to the preservation and public enjoyment of vintage Aluminum Trees is open to the public, displaying its collection for 7 weeks in November 2006 through January 2007.  The Aluminum Tree & Aesthetically Challenged Seasonal Ornament Museum and Research Center (ATOM) will display  50 to 60 vintage aluminum trees (selected from its permanent collection of over 100 vintage trees!) from the 1950’s and 1960’s at the 1 East Main Street, Brevard, North Carolina.   Numerous color wheels and revolving tree stands from the era are interspersed with artifacts of the aluminum trees’ heyday.  The Museum’s 2006 theme is “Shining Examples”, featuring new themed trees such as the "Mark Foley Tree" and the "North Korea Nuclear Tree".

In addition to mid-20th century aluminum trees and associated paraphernalia, the Museum features thousands of handmade and store-bought aesthetically challenged ornaments.  Trees in this seasonal Museum are themed, representing some of the most famous personalities and icons of the mid-20th century.  Other displays in the Museums explain the vintage aluminum tree in intricate detail.  For the more gullible, we present dubious displays on old-growth aluminum tree forests and the growing patterns of aluminum tree saplings.

The Museum is open to the public, with admission costs as listed above Our gift shop gives visitors great holiday gift options such as bagged aluminum tree seeds (grow your own!), and Aluminum Tree needle Potpourri.

photo 1) in the 1960's, literature that came with some trees suggested that the best decoration for the trees was simple balls in one color.  This was suggested so as to not "clutter the inherent beauty of the tree".  Pink and/or blue balls were common.

photo 2) the ATOM museum has an aluminum tree bonsai, the only known one in the world.   The tree is estimated to be over 400 years old.

photo 3) the "hmmmm" tree is the repository of ornaments which can not be classified as suitable for any other themed tree.  We call this the "hmmmmm" tree because you'll stand back, look intently, and say "hmmmmmm...."

photo 4)  the "wizard-tree" of Oz comes adorned with tornados, ruby slippers, flying cows and witches hats.  The full size Dorothy lets you become a part of the scene, ready to be photographed to share with friends.
